Asbestos Related Illnesses
• Pleural Plaques
Are raised areas of thickened
pleura which can be seen on x-rays. The pleura is a two layered
membrane which surrounds the lungs and lines the inside of
the rib cage.
Thickening of the lung walls
due to scarring caused by Asbestos which may cause breathlessness.
Fibrosis or scarring of the
lungs, caused by exposure to Asbestos dust. The condition
develops slowly and incapacitates the victim over a long period
of years.
There is a known association
between Lung Cancer and exposure to Asbestos dust. People
who have already developed Asbestosis have a greater risk
of developing Lung Cancer.
A form of cancer almost exclusively
caused by exposure to Asbestos dust. If effects the lining
of the lungs, chest wall or abdomen.
The development of the disease
can take up to 10-15 to 40 years after first being exposed
to Asbestos dust.

smoking increased the risk of developing an Asbestos related

it is in you own and your family’s interest to stop
smoking immediately.
